Sustainable CAPE’s Food Donation Programs

While each of Sustainable CAPE’s food donation programs engage with the community in unique ways, all were created with the goal to connect Cape Cod residents to healthy food, local harvesters, and each other. Strengthening these connections increases food access for our neighbors in need and fortifies our local food system. By cultivating deep partnerships with local farmers and fishermen, community organizations, and dedicated individuals, we are able to bring this nutritious food to even more Cape Codders.

Whether it is by attending a cooking workshop or growing vegetables for your neighbors, we hope you will join us!

Sustainable CAPE’s Harvest Highlight Program

Sustainable CAPE purchases local produce and proteins in bulk from Cape Cod harvesters and donates it to community kitchens from Provincetown to Orleans. Cooking workshops and newsletters “highlight” the local farmers, fishers, and their harvest. Together with our partners, we share our local bounty, encourage buying local, promote neighboring farmers, and educate about our food access programs.

We are grateful to connect the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown (SKIP), Truro Community Kitchen (TCK), the 246 Community Kitchen in Wellfleet, AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, and Lower Cape Lunch (LOCAL) in Orleans to local food. Funding from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources helps to support and promote our local growers while sharing their nutritious harvest with neighbors in need.

Sustainable CAPE’s Grow-a-Row for Neighbors Program

Established in 2017 by Nauset Regional High School junior Polly Watson and senior Eva Kuchinsky, Grow-a-Row for Neighbors is a community solution for decreasing hunger and increasing health on Cape Cod.

The program encourages gardeners to grow extra fruits & vegetables and deliver their surplus produce to a local farmers’ market. Grow-a-Row volunteers thank the donors and deliver it to the nearest pantry or community fridge in need. Connecting home growers with low-income families lacking in healthy produce gives a meaningful purpose to the gardener and increased access to nutrient-rich food for our neighbors in need. It’s a nutritious solution designed to connect the community and benefit all involved.

How can you participate in the Grow-a-Row for Neighbors program? Grow extra produce and bring the surplus to the farmers’ market, purchase fresh market produce and donate it, donate cash for volunteers to purchase produce from market vendors, or volunteer with us!

Truro Community Fridge

Donate what you can, take what you need!

Sustainable CAPE received a grant to install a community refrigerator at the Truro Public Library, allowing anyone to drop off fresh, uncut produce for their neighbors to pick up. By placing our fridge in a library, we aim to remove the stigma surrounding food access and provide the community with another opportunity to support each other through local produce.
